Many health records, concerning basic health parameters, in the tribal regions of India are not available to physicians - either because they are not maintained or have been lost.

One reason behind this is, their homes are not sturdily built; they do not offer adequate protection against the elements - rains, fires, etc. Faced with such emergencies, health records are often the last thing the tribal families would like to protect. Family safety and material possessions take precedence.

This absence of health records delays the process of diagnosis and treatment - or makes it more cost-intensive. It often ends up costing more than family earnings, which adds to the fear of going to clinics.

The result: Even the most basic of health problems see these tribal people land up in emergencies.

Keshav Srushtee, a local NGO working towards tribal welfare, decided to remedy this situation.

We thought: Folders could get lost. Papers might get washed away. Documents may get destroyed.
The only way to protect and preserve a health record is to make it wearable.

As a pilot project, Keshav Srushtee and its agency partner developed a simple, but totally secure and private, device that would make health record wearable.

Gram Health Locket.

Tribal designs have the power to bring cultural and ethnic richness, aiding integration into the fabric of our lives. The design of health wearables included.
GHL has been designed with these local, tribal art sensibilities, which helps it go beyond visual appeal and provide a deeper connection with the wearer’s cultural heritage and identity.

We started by sharing these lockets with the inhabitants of a tribal village in Western India. Health volunteers collate and create these records with basic health information. Using global standards of security, privacy and consent, these health records are then digitised - and integrated into the locket worn by the family member.

GHL works from a health and health economics perspective.
