Tuvalu is facing the loss of their land and home due to rising sea levels caused by climate change. In 2021, Minister Simon Kofe addressed the world standing in knee-deep water and asked global leaders to act quickly on climate change. But one year later, as the Minister and his team saw another United Nations Climate Change Summit looming, not enough had happened. Tuvalu needed the grab the world’s attention with a new message. Fossil fuel reduction, climate change action and funding for loss and damages were all pressing concerns for Tuvalu as they planned their address to world leaders at COP27.

But in addition to these same messages, there was a new and alarming message.

At the current rate of global sea level rise, the entire country will be submerged in decades – and it will be unliveable well before then. Already, seawater is seeping up through the soil, killing crops and spoiling drinking water. Tuvalu has run out of time.

In addition to the devastating displacement that comes from loss of physical land, the people of Tuvalu face another threat – the loss of their rights as a nation. International law currently dictates that a country needs a “defined physical territory” to exist, so Tuvalu risks becoming the first country to lose its sovereignty due to climate change. The digital nation is at the centre of the fight for a new definition of statehood under international law – a way to protect Tuvalu’s sovereignty and place on the world stage. The only way to change international law is by drawing international attention, so Tuvalu had a message for the world about the steps they are having to take in this, their worst-case scenario.
