This short branded film that was inspired by Reebok's recent "MOST EXTRA" clothing/shoe line. This film follows the story of a young black girl named Angel on the morning of her big regionals track race . As she packs her bag and runs down stairs to grab breakfast and kiss her father good bye, a morning ritual of theirs, she realizes her dad isn't there. Confused she looks around the kitchen and finds a Shoe Box beside a plate of heart shape toast, her favorite. Her mother walks in, breaking the news that he won't be able to make it to her big track meet after school, but left her a gift inside the shoe box for good luck. Disappointed, but curious, she opens up the box to find a letter than her dad wrote her called "Today's Affirmations". As she reads this heartfelt letter that her dad left her, reminding his daughter to always be herself no matter what space she finds herself, we are thrown in Angel's hero journey as she explores her many talents in the classroom, on stage, and on the court. Her father's words being the driver for this change in her character as she embodies what it means to be "The Most Extra". This is a film about being your authentic self as a black girl no matter what. It's about the importance of showing up as YOU whether as a mathlete or an athlete. This film seeks to pay homage to the older black female athletes like Serena Williams and Flo-Jo, who showed an entire generation of young girls that is OK to be yourself despite what the naysayers believe. While also being inspired by the new gen of unapologetic athletes, like Angel Reese (who the main character is named after) and Sha'Carri Richardson.
This is also a film about family. A love letter between a busy father and his multi faceted daughter. Transcending negative stereotypes of the black household by offering a story about a father that has found a unique way to express his support and love for his daughter even when he's not there physically (through handwritten letters). Showcasing the power of affirmative words, and how those words can be carried close even through one's adult/professional life.
