In 2023, White Ribbon, an organization dedicated to educating men and boys about gender-based violence, expanded its focus to address the growing threat of transphobia in Canada. Alarmingly, 70% of trans youth report experiencing sexual harassment or violence. For many in the trans community, the threat of violence feels less like a possibility and more like an inevitability.

Globally, the trans community is plagued by a devastating number of stories of violence and murder. In Canada, an ongoing debate surrounds school boards invoking the notwithstanding clause, questioning whether students have the right to live as their authentic selves without educators notifying their parents.

Working alongside long-time partner Egale, a 2SLGBTQ+ organization, the idea began to take shape. We gained a deeper understanding of T-Day (Transition Day, or Testosterone Day for those transitioning to male-presenting), the moment when a trans person begins living openly as their true self.

This reality is deeply melancholic, as societal pressures and the threat of discrimination often prevent trans youth from feeling comfortable living as their true selves until much later in life. This is compounded by the disproportionate levels of violence and murder they face, meaning that once they do transition, their already short lives can be tragically cut even shorter.

On November 13th, we launched Short Life Stories, a film that tells the story of Vivian, a fictional character inspired by the many trans individuals who have tragically fallen victim to violence and murder. The film follows key events in her life, focusing on her outward transition. Moments of joy and empowerment with friends and loved ones are starkly juxtaposed with the looming threat of discrimination and hate, ultimately culminating in her tragic murder. The film featured real trans actors and was produced by a team largely led by members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
