About the Work
Merrell was launching their newest, most advanced hiking shoe, the Capra. With the advancement of virtual reality, we saw an opportunity. At the Sundance Film Festival, we Introduced Merrell Trailscape, the very first commercial virtual reality experience that uses motion capture technology so the user is able to walk around in a virtual world wearing the headset. Simply, people move in the real world, and they control their movement in the virtual world. A first for a brand. Using Oculus Rift, we took people on beautiful, sometimes terrifying, virtual hike through the Dolomites in Italy. 4D elements like a rope bridge, a rumbling floor, a rock wall, and wind made the experience feel even more life like. If people can be this amazed by nature in a virtual world, just imagine how they’ll feel in the real world. Exactly the point Merrell was trying to make.
