About the Work
Since 2012, UTEC has sought to increase its numbers of Engineering applicants by showing that ingenuity in action can solve actual, relevant problems in a country with many needs such as Peru. 42% of the Peruvian rural jungle doesn’t have electricity. Nature makes it difficult, because floods ruin the wiring. Other solutions, such as kerosene lamps, are expensive and harmful to human health. UTEC teachers and students decided to ally with nature and came up with an innovative, sustainable and cheap system for generating light, using only plants and soil, thereby allowing families without electricity to significantly improve their lives. This initiative is now ready to be taken worldwide, and has made Engineering programs attractive to thousands of Peruvian youngsters.
