About the Work
The summer of 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, humanity's first steps on another planet. The archival material had never been reassembled, until our small team created an online experience that is the length of the actual mission--240 hours long. We re-scanned all of the archival film footage, synced 11,000 hours of mission control audio, made a transcript of every word spoken, and synced over 2000 70mm mission photos. Just for the love of putting good things on the Internet, we launched apolloinrealtime.org, a multimedia web project that is the most complete archive of the Apollo 11 mission ever assembled. Media appeared the very moments they were shot. Visitors could listen to 50 channels of mission audio, each 240 hours long, including recordings of every person in mission control. With no online investments, just relying on word-of-mouth, the international press picked up the story. Over a million people, from 224 different countries, tuned in to witness history unfold, exactly 50 years later. We even heard from Michael Collins himself, who was shocked by the scale of what we had achieved. Apollo in Real Time: a very loud echo of the greatest achievement in human history.
