About the Work
We need to start connecting consumption to its impact on the planet. People are beginning to understand that everything we consume, being its products, services, transportation, or investments, has two prices: One that we pay with money and the other being the impact caused on our planet, and therefore on our wellbeing.
Legislation and government systems will eventually do their part but citizen activism and environmental data provide us with the tools for creating new business models and logic that helps us all to take our everyday responsibility and create pressure with awareness on these burning issues.
The 2030 Calculator is the first tool that allows brands to quickly and easily quantify the carbon footprint (carbon equivalent emissions measured in kg CO2e) of the products they manufacture, using a common universal scoring system.
Creating a universal impact scoring system based on a shared methodology allows brands to accurately measure and communicate the impact of their unique products while allowing for the comparison of the impact scores (carbon footprints) of their products against the same types of products from other brands (and in other categories).
Making these calculations has previously been a costly effort and only the bigger brands have been able to perform them. 2030 Calculator levels the playing field by giving small, local challenger brands a shared tool for creating awareness and transparency.
Creating a standardized scoring system allows brands to disclose their impact via a ‘nutrition label’ of the environmental impact of each unique product, which will allow consumers to compare the impact of products directly (across brands and categories) and make more responsible consumption choices.
The bottom line is carbon labeling need to happen now to make sure consumers can make more impact-aware purchase decisions.
