About the Work

During the summer of 2020, the nation woke up to what Black people have always seen and experienced: deep racism throughout our country. Americans re-examined everything in an effort to tear down systemic racism, from our biased education system to police reform. For most, those things remained abstract concepts. However the NAACP Atlanta wanted to address the very real symbols of racism in our communities: Confederate monuments.

Today, there are 700+ of these monuments in the U.S. and many Americans are still blind to the hate and history that they truly represent. The NAACP Atlanta needed a modern tool to show people that racism is everywhere, affecting everyone, and it’s as close as their local park and county courthouse. We needed to make “invisible” hate visible.

We developed a multi-platform tool—InvisibleHate.org—that gave everyone who has access to a phone in their pocket the power to hold local governments and communities accountable for removing Confederate monuments across the U.S.

Invisible Hate uses geolocation and an interactive map to allow users to see where these hate symbols stand, and cross-reference verified racist/violent historical documentation associated with each monument. Once users learned about the hate, they were able to directly contact the local representatives responsible for protecting these monuments and demand their removal.

The mobile experience also gives users a creative outlet to “digitally deface” monuments with a library of augmented reality stickers on the site and GIPHY, creating custom images to express their views, which they can then share with the world via social media.

Invisible Hate brought information and truth together through simple, accessible mobile technology, letting Americans take the conversation around Confederate monuments into their own hands and tear down these symbols of hate, all across the country.
