About the Work
The people of South Africa still plead for Government funded housing after the promise was made almost 30 years ago before being voted into power, yet there is still a 2.1 million housing backlog. The political corruption themes has further frustrated the underprivileged, forcing them to stop relying on empty promises and start taking matters into their own hands.
With limited funds civilians have been working hard towards realising the dream of owning a home, with many managing to build themselves low-cost homes with their life-savings. However, government legislation ironically deems many of these home builds illegal structures due to the fact that they have not been approved by local councils and can only be approved if planned by a registered building professional. A service cost far out of reach for the majority as they continue to informally plan and build homes.
Due to this there has been nearly 100 of these homes completed demolished by local government, leaving many hopeless and the future right to build a home undemocratized.
As South Africa’s leading cement brand positioned through Creating Concrete Possibilities, AfriSam wanted to play a role in making home building possible for underprivileged South Africans without the risk of demolition. Partnering with a local architectural firm focused on creating smart spaces that solve unique challenges for black South Africans, AfriSam and BlackStudio created Plan (a).
Open-source architect designed and approved plans for low-cost home builds distributed as traditional press ads. These architectural drawings / press ads are not only valid for council approval, but can be used to build directly from by any qualified builder with all the necessary information on one page printed as a centre spread.
Plan (a) is a low-cost, low-material use plan designed to be built in modules. Through its modularity, multiple home configurations can be built off of one plan, whether it’s a one, two or three bedroom home creating a one-size-fits-many home build plan.
We targeted community newspapers that are directly mailed to residents as a free public service by government, in the same areas homes are being demolished. Getting government to help out, without even knowing it.
One plan at a time.
