About the Work
NRMA Insurance is a part of one of the largest insurance networks in Australia and New Zealand. Over one in three people in NSW have policies with the company. NRMA is a part of Insurance Australia Group, the leading insurance network in Australia and New Zealand. NRMA offers a wide range of insurance solutions across automotive, home and more.
The spots were a huge departure from NRMA Insurance’s previous offerings, and from work in the sector in general. With an emphasis on magical realism, the films follow two unlikely heroes- one being a tyre on a cross country mission to replace someone’s tyre at the moment of it bursting, and jets of water that spontaneously put out equally spontaneous bursts of flame that threaten a country home.
Both films had magical realism at the core, and as a result, strayed from pushing the work into overtly fantasy tropes. The films borrowed tonally more from classic cinema. Photographically, the Duel was shot similarly to how you would shoot a battle or fight between two people. With a constant back and forth between rivals framing the story. Runaway on the other hand was almost shot like a road trip, aiming to show the steadfast character of the tyre on its dogged quest.
The practical approach to The Duel required finding an appropriate location, installing the necessary rigging for the event to play out in front of the camera, ensuring the end result remains magically real, with both fire and water taking on sparring identities, and capturing as much in camera as possible- with practical effects being polished with VFX via the exceptional team at Time Based Arts.
Runaway’s magic was grounded by the realism of the tyre and its journey, and so the tyre- while it is most certainly propelled by unseen magical force, is still bound by some laws of reality, it never strays into the realms of the anthropomorphic and therefore retains a lot of grounded charm.
