About the Work
Just like accents, a stammer is simply the way some people talk.
Despite this, people who stammer are regularly faced with questions and comments when they do begin talking, simply because of the way they speak. From jokes about poor internet connections or forgetting their own name, to more serious accusations of being drunk, people who stammer often deal with ignorance about how they talk.
Because of these beliefs, and the assumption that people who stammer don’t speak fluently or clearly, people who stammer have fewer people in the public eye to look up to, and even less opportunity to share their experiences.
“It’s How We Talk” addresses the assumptions people who stammer face on a day to day basis, while giving them a platform to see themselves reflected in the media.
We wanted to make sure the voices of our cast were the most prominent part of the edit, rather than focusing on visuals and making the VO fit them. This meant building the edit entirely around the VO, elevating each individual and showing the way they speak in a raw and honest manner.
Every aspect is designed around the voiceover driving the edit. We took an approach similar to making music videos, rather than ads, placing the flow and rhythm at the centre. The music was composed for the edit in a similar way, putting emphasis on the pauses and sounds the cast make as they stammer, rather than filling the gaps in their speech, something the general public often try to do out of awkwardness.
Our goal was to give the audience an unfiltered experience into what stammering feels like, while putting a respectful and realistic spotlight onto the depiction of stammering. Something that doesn’t happen often enough.
