About the Work
Following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, nearly 10 million refugees – mostly women and chlidren - sought shelter in major Polish cities (like Warsaw) which were already overcrowded. This influx caused rent hikes and increased competition for jobs amidst an unprecedented rise in inflation in cities. Properly dealing with the stream of refugees required redirecting to smaller cities. Small towns in Poland have begun to suffer from depopulation, as young people move to bigger cities; those towns need an infusion of people and have housing and jobs without people to fill them. But those unfamiliar with the region would not know this. This is a classic data problem: the people who needed information the most did not have easy access to it.
Where to Settle made it easy for those who needed information on jobs and housing in a strange land to find it and put it to use. By filling out a simple, anonymous form, refugees could access customized, condensed, and crucial information specific to their unique needs. The tool leverages personalized data, such as current location, size of family, profession, transport and pets, but does not leave sensitive data on the site. The “Where To Settle” digital platform from Mastercard showed refugees the most promising areas in Poland to make their new homes based on their personal abilities and family needs.
Based on data, we created effective and engaging tool:
We attracted 242,170 unique users to the platform and over 73,000 shared their data in order to find a home.
Basing on data from Where to Settle and the number of Ukrainian refugees in Poland, we estimate that approximately 20.05%* of refugees benefited from the platform, and that 92% of Ukrainians engaged in helping refugees found the tool useful.
