Background

Muse had quietly become one of the most widely used music software companies in the world. Through products including Ultimate Guitar, MuseScore, Audacity and MuseClass, it supported more than 400 million users across learning, practicing, composing and performing. Yet despite this reach, awareness of Muse as a unified company remained low.

Each product had developed its own identity, voice and audience. Internally, teams described a persistent challenge called “the gap,” the distance between a person’s creative ambition and their ability to express it. That same gap existed within the organization, creating fragmentation between products and limiting the company’s ability to communicate a shared purpose.

The challenge was to unify a complex ecosystem while clarifying Muse’s role in the creative lives of millions. The goal was to create a brand that could connect its portfolio, align internal teams and articulate a clear vision for the future of musical expression.

Creative Idea

We repositioned Muse around a single idea: Creative Fluency.

Fluency captures the moment when expression becomes natural and friction fades. It reflects the reality that most people engage with music as a form of personal expression rather than performance.

This idea became the foundation for a new brand system designed to feel rhythmic, harmonic and emotionally resonant. Inspired by musical notation, sonic vibration and abstract geometric composition, the identity behaves like sound in motion. Forms pulse, resolve and interact across applications and environments.

The result is a unifying framework that connects Muse’s portfolio under a shared philosophy while allowing each product to retain its character within a coherent system.

Insights & Strategy

Research revealed that the true threshold for musical empowerment is fluency. For most people, the goal is the ability to express ideas freely and confidently. Ease and momentum matter more than technical mastery.

This insight shaped a strategy centered on reframing Muse as a guide across the creative gap. The brand would shift from a collection of tools to a cohesive ecosystem supporting every stage of musical life.

We developed a platform that could unify diverse products while expressing a shared purpose. The strategy focused on creating clarity across the portfolio, strengthening internal alignment and helping users understand how each product contributes to a broader creative journey.

By anchoring the brand in fluency, Muse gained a clear and scalable narrative capable of supporting growth, innovation and future product development.

Execution

The identity system translates the idea of fluency into a cohesive visual and verbal language.

A modular design framework allows forms to move rhythmically across touchpoints, creating a sense of motion and resonance. Visual elements draw from musical structures and abstract geometry to create compositions that feel expressive and dynamic.

The system spans typography, iconography, motion, product interfaces and communications, creating consistency across digital and physical environments.

We restructured the brand architecture to connect all products under a unified identity while preserving their individual strengths. Messaging frameworks articulate the company’s purpose and guide communication across teams and markets.

The result is a flexible system that supports global launches, aligns internal stakeholders and provides a foundation for continued evolution.

Results

The new brand established Muse as a clear and unified presence across its global ecosystem. Internal teams gained a shared language and framework, improving alignment across products and functions.

The unified architecture strengthened connections between products and clarified the company’s role in supporting creative expression across the full musical journey. The system now supports ongoing product development and launches while providing a consistent experience for users worldwide.

As a result, Muse (we hope) now communicates a clear philosophy centered on creative fluency, helping millions of people express themselves with greater confidence and ease.
