Jocelyn Chambers has always been a creative entrepreneur, learning how to play piano at age 7 and running Sweets by Jocelyn at age 9. Music and film deeply resonated with her as a young child and once she discovered film scoring as a career option, it was a no-brainer that she would pursue it. She began studying composition at the Armstrong Community Music School, winning the Texas Young Composer’s competition twice in 2011 and 2013. She attended the American Festival of the Arts, where she wrote the string quartet "Enigma for the Night" in collaboration with the Houston Ballet. Chambers went on to study at The University of Texas at Austin, where she received a Bachelor of Music Composition and was honored by the College of Fine Arts for her advocacy and activism.
She moved to California, pursuing a graduate certificate in Film Scoring from the University of California at Los Angeles. While studying, she began working as a post-production assistant on Netflix’s “Grand Army” and “Designated Survivor”, eventually scoring spec music for both projects. She also scored “Mama Gloria”, a feature documentary highlighting the life of Black trans elder Gloria Allen, and “In Favor of Fetus,” a short documentary detailing women's experiences affected by Wisconsin’s Cocaine Mom law. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she revived Sweets by Jocelyn, which she had previously put on hold to focus on composing.

ROLE IN PROJECT
For Dina & Mita, I immersed myself in the world of Mariachi music, extensively studying its instrumentation, rhythm, and tonal qualities. I learned to write for the traditional Mexican instrument, the Guitarrón, which played a crucial role in capturing Mariachi’s authentic sound. Understanding the film’s pace was essential, so I spent significant time marking key action points the music needed to highlight. This created a seamless blend between the high-energy visuals and the captivating score.

Smirnoff
ROLE IN PROJECT
For Smirnoff’s Smash Tea Partay, I drew inspiration from both traditional and modern musical theater to amplify the story’s drama. It is, after all, a forbidden love story between Smirnoff and traditional iced tea! Since the film was shot after the music was recorded, it was vital to infuse the music and vocals with intensity before the actors even stepped on set. This approach ensured the dramatic essence of the project was fully realized, immersing the audience in the story.

Clash of Clans
ROLE IN PROJECT
Creating the piece for “Clash of Clans: Clan Capital” was an exercise in highlighting comedy through sincerity. The piece is completely orchestral, so I experimented with “angelic” elements like flute and harp to accompany the wizard’s lament. After each track interruption and restart, I incorporated more melodies and harmonies to progress the story. Three interruptions in, the music was allowed to reach its destined climax, bringing the characters to their final destination and enhancing the comedic narrative.

Houston Grand Opera
ROLE IN PROJECT
For the Houston Grand Opera piece “Take Your Eyes Off My Joy,” the best decision I made was to leave the initial idea alone. Originally, poet-laureate Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton and I planned to explore the theme of “identity” through the relationship between mothers and daughters. However, Deborah’s final poem was completely different, highlighting Black Joy as both a sacred experience and an endangered species. Its poignance profoundly moved me. Paralyzed by indecision on how to approach the music, I chose to let the melody come naturally. Over a year later, the melody revealed itself, making the writing process almost seamless. I believe this was the only way I could authentically honor the gift of Black Joy.

ROLE IN PROJECT
Lil’ Ruby challenged me to push my creative boundaries, exploring genres I had never written for before. is a modern retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with Spider-Verse-like sensibilities. I was briefed to create a score that was “youthful,” “energetic,” and “urban,” highlighting Ruby’s confidence and bravery. As a Black woman whose Spidey Senses are attuned to musical pandering, I wanted to make sure the music I wrote represented an authentic expression of Black culture. To achieve this, I crafted playlists for each character, ensuring the music captured their essence: Ruby’s music was spirited and playful, Howell’s was sinister, and Nanda’s was soulful and warm. These playlists, featuring genres like drill, hip-hop, Motown, and hybrid orchestral, directly informed the music I wrote for the short. I even rapped on the Lil’ Ruby’s title track, challenging my own confidence and expanding my creative horizons.

NBCUniversal x Comcast
ROLE IN PROJECT
For NBCUniversal x Comcast's Voices of the Civil Rights Movement, I composed an anthem to highlight the triumphs and trials of the Civil Rights Movement. My experience with synesthesia, where I see colors when I hear music, guided the composition. I used the key of F (a bright, warm red) and the key of D (a rich, vibrant green) to convey passion, fervor, and growth. The trumpet served as the melodic focus to evoke excitement. Additionally, I incorporated a musical quote from “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing,” the Black National Anthem, which resonated deeply with the audience during the VOCRM celebration, encapsulating both the pain and power of the movement.
