Read Interview
Brandon Kapelow is a visual storyteller from Wyoming whose credits span work as a director, photographer and cinematographer. As a survivor of suicide loss at an early age, Brandon has a passion for exploring topics related to mental health, which is his current focus as the 2024 Western Media Fellow at Stanford University's Bill Lane Center for the American West. Outside of his creative practice, Brandon is a peer-support facilitator for SOLACE and serves on the Ethical Reporting Advisory Committee for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Brandon’s short film ‘An Act of Service’ premiered on The New York Times Op-Docs, and documents the use of psychedelic-assisted therapies in treating workplace traumas among first responders. His films have screened at numerous domestic and international festivals, including the Academy and BAFTA-qualifying Los Angeles Short Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival and Aesthetica Short Film Festival.
As a photographer, Brandon's ongoing body of work 'Somewhere I Belong' focuses on the issue of suicide in the American West, which for decades has experienced the nation's highest rates of suicide death. His writing and images from the series were featured in TIME Magazine and Magnum Photos, and he is the recipient of the 2023 Project Development Grant from CENTER Santa Fe. His work has been published in Adweek, Billboard, Booooom, Complex, Engadget, The Fader, NPR, Pitchfork, Stereogum and Vice.
Brandon's commercial credits include repeat collaborations with brands such as Airbnb, Amazon, Chevrolet, Dove, Google, Ford, Meta, Uber and Verizon. His campaign work for Samsung's 'Voices of Life', which provides technological solutions for parents navigating premature pregnancies, won a Silver Lion at Cannes. Brandon is proud to have directed a national campaign for the mental healthcare provider Talkspace, in collaboration with brand ambassador Michael Phelps, which aired during the 2022 Grammys.
Based between Los Angeles, Vancouver and Wyoming, Brandon’s home is on the road - inspired by changing landscapes and the people that inhabit them.

The New York Times Op-Docs
ROLE IN PROJECT
Brandon conceptualized and directed this documentary short, which he developed in collaboration with the team at The New York Times Op-Docs. He also served as an executive producer and cinematographer for the project. Brandon became interested in making a film about the medical potential of psychedelics after the renewed wave of publicity stemming from the publication of Michael Pollan's seminal 2018 book How to Change Your Mind.

ROLE IN PROJECT
This ongoing project involves a series of stories written and photographed by Brandon that explore the issue of suicide in the American West. As a suicide loss survivor from Wyoming, this subject is extremely personal to Brandon, who developed the project during two years of mentorship with the Magnum Photo agency. This project reflects the first significant merge between Brandon's volunteer efforts in suicide prevention and peer-support, and his career in visual media - a pairing that has become a central theme in his work.

Canadian Cancer Society
ROLE IN PROJECT
For this project, Brandon was commissioned by the Canadian Cancer Society to write and direct a portrait of cancer survivor and advocate Angus Pratt. Having lost two grandparents to cancer, this opportunity was incredibly meaningful for Brandon, who worked closely with Pratt to craft a story around his life using a hybrid documentary/scripted approach. The film is part of an ongoing campaign by CCS to help in their annual fundraising efforts surrounding their flagship Daffodil Ball, and Brandon's film helped contribute to a record-breaking $4.4m in donations during this year's event.

ROLE IN PROJECT
Given his passion for mental health, Brandon was excited to have the opportunity to direct this national broadcast campaign for Talkspace, in collaboration with brand ambassador Michael Phelps, which aired during the 2022 Grammys. Google Preferred
ROLE IN PROJECT
This piece was a defining project in Brandon's early career, as he was given a unique opportunity to write and direct an anthem video for the launch of a new Google product. Formerly known as Google Preferred (now called YouTube Select), the service was one of the earliest platforms for connecting businesses with opportunities for targeted advertising across Google's media platforms, such as YouTube. Working with agency partners at Media.Monks, Brandon conceptualized a story showcasing the broad range of ways in which users interact with Google content, and how it reflects their individual lives and interests.

NPR
ROLE IN PROJECT
This forthcoming story is being distributed by NPR in Q3 2024, and builds upon the body of work Brandon started developing in Somewhere I Belong. In this multidisciplinary project, Brandon uses documentary radio, writing and photography to explore an innovative, Native-led approach to suicide prevention in the nation's most disproportionately impacted region for suicide death - Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Brandon spent more than two months doing fieldwork for this story in Alaska's remote Bush villages and military installations, conducting over 50 interviews that will be shared as a series for both local and national radio outlets, as well as an online article accompanied by photographs.
