Amir Hamja is an award-winning photographer based in New York City. He became the first Bangladeshi photographer to join The New York Times as a fellow during its prestigious 2023-24 Fellowship Program.
Originally from Chittagong, Bangladesh, Amir studied Pharmaceutical Science before moving to New York in 2017. There, he pursued photography at the International Center of Photography on a Director’s Scholarship. Amir served as the official photographer for the Emmy Award-winning Netflix show Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. His photo series Protest for George Floyd has been featured in The New York Times and National Geographic. His work has also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, De Volkskrant, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Børsen. In 2017, he received the National Award at the Sony World Photography Awards in London.
Amir’s selected works have been showcased in international festivals and group exhibitions, including the Sony World Photography Awards, EyeEm Festival, Newseum, and New York University.
