Visual artist and storyteller from Paraguay of Afro-descendant heritage, who expresses herself through video art, performance, collage, photography, and self-portraiture. Her work explores the intersections of identity, racialization, memory, and colonialism, developing visual research lines that approach these themes from a situated perspective.
She coordinates reflection workshops on racism in visual narratives and is part of Ruda, a collective of women and non-binary photographers from various Latin American countries, as well as Portunholas, a collective of South American feminities and visual artists.
As a documentary photographer with several years of experience, she has collaborated with international media such as The Guardian (UK), El País (Spain), Der Spiegel (Germany), Bloomberg (USA), and Libération (France).
She is co-founder of La Fresca Storytelling, a multimedia production company working in Paraguay and Spain. She has directed and produced documentaries, reports, and visual projects focused on human rights, health, and the environment. Throughout her career, she has traveled across Paraguay capturing diverse stories.
She received the Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Committed Photojournalism. Mayeli combines her degree in Social Work with her visual practice, allowing her to bring a special sensitivity to her work.
