John Jay

President of Global Creative

John C Jay is President of Global Creative for Fast Retailing Co., owner of Uniqlo and other international lifestyle brands. He lives and works in Portland, Tokyo and New York. Jay recently helped to create the new global headquarters in Tokyo, Uniqlo City with architectural firm, Allied Works. He is currently opening and overseeing new global Creative R&D Labs around the world.

Previously, Jay was a partner and Co-Global Executive Creative Director for Wieden+Kennedy with founder, Dan Wieden. . Jay served ad Co- Creative Director for the Nike USA and Global accounts. He lived in Japan for 6 years, leading the agency’s growth in Asia. He opened W+K Tokyo and working as Executive Creative Director and later helped to oversee the launch of W+K Shanghai and W+K Delhi. Jay also created the award winning independent music label in Japan called W+K Tokyo Lab. Later, Jay opened his own creative agency within W+K, called GX servicing global accounts such as Shiseido and Ace Hotels.

Prior to Wieden + Kennedy, he was the Executive V.P. / Director of Creative Services ; as well as Executive Creative Director for Bloomingdales in New York.

Today, he continues to oversee Studio J , his independent creative and product consultancy in Portland Oregon. Recently launched FPO, a new design studio and gallery non-profit to publish and support young artists. He is a co-founder of Neighbors, giving new artists in Portland their own studio spaces at the Yale Union Contemporary Art Center. Jay is an active supporter of young artists in Japan. He founded the Jay Scholarship at The Ohio State University, College of Art.

Jay was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame in 2011, selected by Design USA in 2013 as top ten “Most Influential Art Directors in the Past 50 Years”, Fast Co.’s "100 Most Creative People in Business” in 2011, Creativity Magazine’s “Creative 50” in 2014, Leipzig Book Fair “Gold Medal” , Copenhagen Museum for “14 Most Beautiful Books in the World. For Studio J - GQ’s “Top Ten New Restaurants of the Year (Co –owner and designer of PING). For his Bloomingdales years, he was the youngest inductee into the Retail Marketing Association’s (RAMA) Hall of Fame.

Jay has served on the National Board of Directors for the Smithsonian Institute.
