Onida began with one simple question: how broad can a type family be before it is no longer recognisable as a family? Through many trials and almost as many errors while trying to combine disparate styles into a coherent family, the framework became a fairly conventional one. Three variable axes: one for weight, another for width and the third for contrast. Eight masters were drawn: four for an elegant high contrast display face, and four for a sturdy low contrast face, also intended for display. Between these two extremes of contrast lies a range of interpolated styles which are more suited to continuous text. The resulting designspace provides a range of typographic personalities, allowing for a variety of stylistic combinations to be used.
