‘Aazadi’—meaning freedom in Hindi—is a magazine focussing on the lack of freedom in India, a democratic secular nation. This issue deep-dives into censorship in the Bollywood film industry. Saffron is the colour of the current ruling party in India, which is behind a lot of the recent extreme censorship acts. White in the Indian flag represents truth, and black is the colour most associated with covering things up. That is why these three colours formed the primary palette.
Redacted text using thick black lines is used as the graphic device to simply and effectively convey the theme. For the opening spreads, cut-up photographs and bits of black and white paper were collaged together to depict disjointed, fabricated stories. The collages were made analogue and then scanned in to give them a more authentic feeling. Sheets of orange vellum stating 'Error 404 – Page Not Found' were added in front of pages with content that would have been deemed 'too sexual' in nature, to express how things are being hidden from the audience. The cover page itself is hidden by a similar sheet of vellum, to immediately give the reader a notion of censorship.
