Description
Cinematography:
The cinematography has been chosen on purpose to be very monotonous and repetitive, to further emphasize the protagonist's life situation. The largely static camera work and the always same view through the door frame are furthermore meant to underline the stagnation in his career. A few times we break out of this pattern to show is dedication, which ultimately brings him success in his endeavours. A particular challenge here was to the lighting as he is always standing in front of a door that has to open. Careful planing around the movement of the sun and creative lighting to bounce light from the sides and top was in the end the only option to have the protagonist not always in shadow.
General:
How crazy would it be if a salesman tried to sell a treadmill to a person without legs?
But that's exactly what "The Salesman" shows, the somewhat different NIKE commercial. Through an emotionally stirring story and an unexpected twist at the end, the viewer is made aware that the will is everything. Not only in sports, but also in all other situations in life: where there's a will, there's a way.
The spot is about Ralph, an unsuccessful salesman who doesn't give up after a few failures, and Erich, who lost both legs in an accident but doesn't let it get him down either. The two paths in life cross and a win-win situation develops.
