Description
This exhibition catalog showcases my MFA thesis show, titled "Phantom Scripting". The show is an immersive environment and multitrack sound installation that delves into the experiences of migrants as they navigate unfamiliar cultural systems in a new country.
The installation is designed as a stage using an abstract line graphic that expands on the use of theater tools, such as spike tape, and is mixed with the visual of a floor plan. The space does not feature any actors. Instead, a pile of scripts is placed in the gallery to serve as the voice of the actors. Multiple typefaces are used to build up the typographic characterization of each character based on their personality. This visual concept was extended to the cover design of the book.
The catalog is written in English and Mandarin, and is purposely laid out in their original writing directions -- vertical and horizontal, respectively. The weaving of the different writing directions is a metaphor for the bilingual daily life of immigrants.
The bilingual background information is placed in the margin area of the catalog, while the middle of the page remains the "stage". This layout synchronizes with the gallery space, where the stage is set in the middle of the room and the audience walks around it. The script is intentionally printed on different paper sizes and materials to create a transition for readers to the background of the play. The catalog's design aims to transfer the spatial and visual experience in the gallery.
