We live in an increasingly connected digital world, but despite the growing global network, social isolation is reaching an all-time high. My goal was to create an experience using experimental typography that would subtly raise awareness for this issue and encourage people to think about ways they can develop meaningful connections.

Taking inspiration from photo cut out boards and other design projects that use the human body to create letterforms, I came up with an interactive display that required people to put their arms through a board to spell a word. The word I decided to have people spell was "INTERACT." This has a double meaning, implying both the need for the participant to interact with the installation, but also the need to interact with multiple people in order to spell the word. A sign to the side of the installation read, "will you interact with me?" There were no other instructions besides directions for how to position your arms. I left the installation in a public place as an experiment to see if people would choose to interact with strangers, and work together to create something beautiful.

Several people participated in the experiment and interacted with the installation. While the concept may have been lost on some, it left others to think about the meaning of it all, many coming to their own unique conclusion. The resulting footage and imagery from the experiment has a uniquely human quality to it that forces the viewer to ponder on themes of connectedness and interactions.
