“1984" is a dystopian satirical, political, and social science novel by George Orwell. The story takes place in a world where an ever-surveillant State uses indoctrination, lies, fear, and severe punishment to force total conformity in its subjects. The story is told from a third-person perspective and focuses on a character named Winston Smith.

In the novel, memory is shown to play a crucial role in illustrating the dangers of totalitarianism and the manipulation of the past by the Party. The Party controls the people's perception of history by rewriting and falsifying past records. Throughout the novel, Winston's battles in pursuit of the truth and reconnection with his past become a threat to the Party. Additionally, this novel also shows how memory could be used as a tool of resistance and personal identity. This raises the question, what are we without our memories?

This title sequence navigates Orwell's classic dystopian story from the perspective of Winston and his battle in attempting to reconnect with his past – his only way to preserve his sense of individuality. Hazy visuals and flickering text effects are used to visualize Winston's clouded memory and foreshadow the novel's ending. Not only that but a muted and gloomy collage style hints to the viewers at the story's setting and plot. Finally, these dreary visuals are juxtaposed with the beautiful and majestic national anthem of Oceania to further highlight the society's loyalty and undying love for Big Brother, the leader of Oceania.
