The internet is the foundation of modern education, yet blind students face a massive barrier to digital autonomy.
In the United States alone, there are 627,172 children under the age of 18 living with vision impairment. While standard screen readers exist, they have a critical blind spot: 94% of websites are built without the necessary backend labels, such as alt-text or clearly labeled buttons, that these accessibility tools require. This leaves blind students unable to understand essential page content, making navigation slow and frustrating, and often forcing them to rely on sighted assistance instead of working independently.

To solve this, we created Google Braille, a free Gemini AI plug-in that turns any standard computer trackpad into a tactile guide for web independence.

Google Braille compensates for missing website code by interpreting web pages in real time, thanks to Gemini AI. The plug-in maps the trackpad to mirror the computer screen. As a student slides a finger across the trackpad, Gemini AI identifies exactly what is under the cursor and reads it aloud. It goes far beyond basic text, intelligently interpreting complex visual elements like graphics, historical maps, and scientific formulas. This gives students everything they need to follow lessons and complete their work autonomously, and ultimately provides them with a tool to explore the entire web with true independence.

To launch the initiative, we partnered with the Disabled Students' Program at UC Berkeley, starting with their 63 blind students. By turning inclusion into a new model of digital autonomy, what began as a targeted program is designed to scale globally. From Berkeley to Melbourne, Dhaka, São Paulo, and around the world, Google Braille is breaking barriers and opening the digital world to everyone.
