Outside & In Between: Genderqueer America as Captured by Chloe Aftel
Thursday, November 14, 2019
The One Club For Creativity is excited to continue its Artist Talk series with award-winning photographer Chloe Aftel.
Six years ago, Aftel embarked on the photography project Outside & In Between, a cross-country examination of the non-binary and genderqueer community in the United States, after photographing her friend Edie, who was fearless and bold in their own gender expression. “I just thought it was so beautiful and liberating to see someone being themselves,” Aftel says.
Believing there was a larger visual story to tell, Aftel traveled around the country, from the rural Midwest to the suburbs of Georgia to the sprawling Bay Area, documenting the subjects in places that feel like home to each of them, as their most honest, real, true selves. The portraiture includes well-known activists like London-based model Rain Dove and Sasha Fleischman, an agender teen wearing a skirt who was set on fire on a bus in Oakland, CA.
The resulting series, which has received multiple prestigious awards including Critical Mass, International Photography Awards and LensCulture Portrait Awards, was turned into a 60-page, limited run book of all color prints as well as written pieces explaining the movement and the personal impact of gender identity and expression by some of the subjects. At the Artist Talk, Aftel will discuss the impact of the project, her creative process and share work from the book.
A portion of each book sale goes to The Trevor Project .
