The One Club Expands To China

The One Club

Sep 01, 2005

(New York, NY, September 1, 2005) - The One Club, the nation's foremost non-profit organization dedicated to creativity in advertising, announced today the opening of a full-time office in China. Its first physical location outside of the U.S. will be located in the Central Business District of Beijing. The One Club currently has representatives in South Africa and Brazil.

"We have the opportunity to help lift the blanket off of Chinese creative talent," said Kevin Swanepoel, Marketing Director of the One Club, who will oversee the operation. "Through our educational efforts, our mission is to foster creative thinking that will lead to groundbreaking work in China's underdeveloped advertising industry."

The One Club is no stranger to China. The organization launched The One Show China in 2001, introducing the One Show's traveling exhibition to a new audience and offering speaking panels, workshops and an awards presentation. With a new One Club office, the program will center on promoting student competitions from universities and communication programs around the country. Like all One Club events, the student competition is judged and evaluated by a select group of advertising creative directors and professors from China and the United States.

As China's advertising expenditure rises by an annual rate of nearly 40 percent, economic forecasters predict China will evolve into an advertising behemoth in the next decade. This prediction is heightened after a ruling late last year that allows overseas firms to set up wholly-owned advertising companies within the nation, effective December 11, 2005.

"Over our four years in this market we have developed a unique understanding of the environment - our footprint is already here," Swanepoel noted. "In that time we have noticed an increase in the quality of work from the students."

Plans for the fall include an education workshop for 900 students in conjunction with the two largest universities in China: Academy of Fine Arts and the Communication University of China. Moreover, The One Club will develop a Mandarin-language Web site for members and students.

The formation of the first-ever outpost of the prestigious non-profit trade organization is being made possible by the sponsorship of such multinationals as Adobe and Wacom.

The One Club is the world's foremost non-profit organization for the recognition and promotion of excellence in advertising. Founded in 1975 and based in New York City, The One Club produces three annual awards competitions: The One Show, One Show Design and One Show Interactive, which culminate in awards ceremonies held in New York City each May.

As part of The One Club's mission to support the next generation of advertising professionals, the non profit organization nurtures emerging talent through scholarships, portfolio reviews and an annual student exhibition and competition. The One Club maintains a full-time exhibition gallery, hosts an ongoing series of lectures and events, and produces publications that include the quarterly one.a magazine and The One Show and One Show Interactive annuals.
