ADC Jury chairs reflect on what the ADC Awards mean to them

It’s wild to think the ADC Annual Awards is over a century old– so much of what is entered today wasn’t even possible to make back when it all began. So we asked our Jury Chairs one final question: what does this monumental 102-year-old competition mean to you?

The final deadline for the ADC 102nd Annual Awards is next Friday, March 3, so enter today, while you still can! We asked the Jury Chairs a few other thoughtful questions you may want to check out. Read what they had to say in Mining Creative Gemstones, Trailblazers, Wishful Thinking, and Looking Back to Look Ahead.

ADC is tough. I've been in the industry for over two decades now and have been blessed with working on great brands with great people. Some of the work has gone on to win awards in major international award shows. But ADC has always been notoriously hard to win in! Been lucky enough to earn a few Cubes, but they are far more scarce than some of the other statues on the shelf. That's what makes it even more compelling. I think it's a great honor to be a part of a legacy, and be a small part of the story that's ADC.

The ADC attracts the attention of some of the best designers practicing today. This is the forum where we can all gather to appreciate and celebrate our creative community. And steal ideas.

It’s a massive honor to do our part and write a page in the ADC history book. Perhaps we’ll get lucky to find and reward that piece of work that’ll become a future milestone for where creativity is today. It’s fantastic to get to award and elevate work that’ll be celebrated in the company of more than a century worth of game changing, brilliant, beautiful, and unique creative work.

It is important for me to see how others interpret fashion for the future. This competition represents the best new designers who can reshape the fashion industry. I am proud to represent and hopefully inspire a new generation of creative individuals.

While other competitions limit their entries from a certain country or design category, ADC is unique because it is a global competition in almost every discipline of design you can think of. Now as we witness the wave of AI-generated art and ADC's new AI category, it will be interesting how we as jurors rethink the criteria and definition of great design. It's truly an honor to be invited this year as chair of the motion category.

As a contemporary artist, I have worked in a completely different industry from what the ADC Awards represent. Back when I was a university student in Japan, being selected for an international ADC Award was not only considered a prestigious honor, but also it was so powerful that it guaranteed a job for life. As a Japanese artist, I am honored to serve as the chair of the Illustration Jury for ADC. Thank you very much.

Its reach and respect. There are many award schemes and easy wins today. Only a few consistently set your heart racing… ADC is the one.

The ADC Awards first celebrated advertising, graphic design and communication, and then morphed to include other creative domains. Today creative domains overlap to the point that the liminal spaces between disciplines are as much validated as expressions on their own terms. In this context, it is exciting that ADC opens up opportunities to see works across all domains like architecture, art, design, craft, ecology, etc., and very often these segue into each other. Therefore it offers engaging and critical reflection spaces during the process.
