Presenting the kick ass class of Young Guns 22

It’s a kick-ass class. Young Guns 22 is topping the charts in creativity. But are you even surprised? Of course, not. If you’re new here, let me catch you up. Young Guns is a community of incredibly talented individuals – think amazing cinematographers, animators, illustrators, photographers, designers, and directors – and a new class of winners is chosen by an expert jury every year. This year we have 33 winners and among them, we have some very new, very exciting titles to unveil – an Architectural Designer, Composer, Stage & Show Designer, and Colorist.

We interviewed the winners so we could share their prowess with you. And if you’re a NYC local you can snag a ticket to the official YG22 Party at Sony Hall on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, where you will have the chance to meet and greet them.

Young Guns continue to dominate the creative industry, so we’re happily presenting you with the kick-ass class of Young Guns 22.

What were your original impressions of the Young Guns competition, award, and community?

I first heard about Young Guns from my mentor Jesse Rieser when I was a studio intern for him during my time at university. My first impression of the Young Guns competition was that it’s a highly sought-after accolade, carrying significant expectations for the artists and their work, all within a tight-knit community.

How did you end up in the creative field?

My creative story started with my introduction to the skateboard community, where I instantly gravitated toward the artistic expression encouraged within that environment. I began filming and taking photos of my friends, capturing the mutual passion. My interest in the visual arts developed further when I was introduced to black and white film photography in high school, where I spent the majority of my time in the darkroom, immersing myself in the process. Upon graduation, I entered a four-year fine arts program at university, where I honed my skills and prepared to launch a professional career in photography.

Congrats on the YG win! Why did you decide to enter this year?

I entered this year’s Young Guns competition to explore new possibilities and see what would unfold. I wanted to challenge myself to create a standout entry and reinterpret my portfolio within the competition’s guidelines. This experience pushed me to think critically about my work, experiment with new ideas, and refine my artistic vision. Engaging with the competition not only motivated me to elevate my craft but also allowed me to connect with a community of like-minded artists.

You only get to submit six projects that embody you and your talent. So, how did you decide which pieces were good enough to make the cut?

I carefully selected projects that best represent my approach to photography and creativity. My goal was to showcase a diverse range of work that highlights my versatility as an artist. Each project reflects different aspects of my artistic vision, from portraiture to abstract compositions, demonstrating my ability to adapt to various styles and subjects. By presenting this well-rounded portfolio, I aimed to convey not just my technical skills but also my passion for storytelling through images - inviting viewers to engage with my work on multiple levels.

What was your reaction when you discovered that you won?

I was pleased to receive the news that I was a winner of this year’s Young Guns competition. I recall seeing the congratulatory email just after I concluded a Zoom call. The news was uplifting and set a positive tone for the remainder of the week. It prompted me to reflect on the hard work and dedication that led to this recognition, reinforcing my commitment to my craft and the artistic community I’m proud to be a part of.

How does your current home inspire your creativity as an artist?

Currently, I am inspired by my new home of Los Angeles. The energy, the people, and the city’s culture have been feeding my creativity and igniting a hunger to explore new and higher professional opportunities. Each day presents fresh perspectives and experiences that encourage me to push my boundaries as an artist, and I’m excited to see where this journey will lead.

Now that you’re a part of the Young Guns community, are there any past winners you look up to and admire?

I greatly admire the work of Kelia Anne MacCluskey (YG20), particularly her captivating portraits. Her ability to convey emotion and personality through her subjects is remarkable. Each portrait feels intimate and genuine. The way she combines technical skill with an unique artistic vision inspires me to approach my own work with a similar focus on connection and narrative.

If you could create a new Young Guns tradition, what would you want it to be and why?

If I could introduce a new Young Guns tradition, it would definitely be a yearly meet in New York City with my fellow winners! I love NYC, and any excuse to visit is a good one for me.

Name a dream project that you have yet to fulfill — maybe Young Guns will propel you in that direction!

I’m eager to explore new opportunities in the commercial photography space. Combining my fine art background with commercial projects would be both challenging and exciting. Collaborating with companies like Nike and Apple has been a dream of mine since I was a kid.

Will we see you at the YG22 party in NYC in November?
