Spotlighting the stupendous class of Young Guns 20

Nearly 100 renowned industry professionals made up the jury for Young Guns this year. And after revealing the 84 finalists, it is finally time to unveil the 31 winners who make up the class of Young Guns 20.

Every year, we add another class of young talent from all over the globe to the exclusive Young Guns community. The winners of Young Guns 20 are your next project directors, animators, designers, editors, illustrators, artists, photographers, storytellers, coders, and writers. So this is your cue to follow them on Instagram immediately– because they are our industry’s future legends after all.

In two weeks, the winners will fly into NYC from around the world to celebrate their accomplishments, make new friends, have a few cocktails, and take home their official Young Guns Cube. We can’t wait to celebrate with them at Sony Hall on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at 6:30 PM– and we hope to see you there too!

Before the party begins, we took the time to get to know each of our winners so you can read up on the highly creative individuals who make up Young Guns 20.

How did you first hear about Young Guns? What were your initial impressions of the Young Guns competition — the award and the community?

When I first heard about Young Guns, it was through the work of Marco Prestini (YG16). He's one of the directors I met while getting my feet wet in directing, and his work is just amazing.

Even though I know most of the impressions are about to come, knowing I am sharing the victory with such great creatives is shaking up my nerves and soul.

"Even though I know most of the impressions are about to come, knowing I am sharing the victory with such great creatives is shaking up my nerves and soul."

Congrats on the first-time win! How did you decide what to enter?

This is my first time entering! My list is not very long yet, but each entry feels like a representation about what I like about filmmaking. So beyond natural, this selection process felt pretty automatic for me - there wasn't much to choose from!

How would you describe your personal brand? Now, try defining it in three words.

I will try in three words. There's something about the 'weirdness of ordinary life' that I find fascinating.

There's nothing more ridiculous and absurd than the everyday. An ordinary day is full of hilarious moments that often go unnoticed. There are times when I'm reminded how strange our world can be, but it's these little observations and stories from the "weirdness" in everyday living which make me laugh and wonder why things are so absurd.

Who are some of the biggest influences on you and your career?

Hamlet (the production company, not the tragedy) helped me find my own way. The production company's support was crucial in developing my career. Their support and encouragement made all the difference in getting off the ground smoothly.

Now that you’re in the Young Guns crew, are there any past winners you look up to and admire?

Marco Prestini (YG16), Maceo Frost (YG15), and Daniels (YG14).

This is YG20, but what do you imagine you’ll be up to when YG30 rolls around in 2032?

Professionally my dream is getting into the narrative world. It's a liquid labyrinth I am not sure how to navigate– I don't expect it to be easy or straightforward, but that's where my mind is heading toward.

Any thoughts on how you are feeling about winning YG20? Best piece of advice you have ever received?

The best piece of advice I've ever had was to focus internally rather than externally.

Looking at other people's work in a compulsive way can be self-destructive to directors, but focusing on your own taste and understanding the way your mind works will automatically improve the output– because there won't be any extra effort into making sure everything matches up properly.

I feel so honoured that my work has been recognised by this award - it's really special sharing it with such talented colleagues who are also working hard behind the scenes.
