About the Work
BioMed Realty wanted to transform the atrium of their building into an inspiring and contemplative space that encouraged collaboration. They wanted an iconic installation that reflected the innovative scientific work happening in their building. We created Diffusion Choir, a kinetic sculpture that celebrates the beauty of collaboration by visualizing the movements of an invisible flock of birds. Four hundred paper-like elements are suspended in the sunlit atrium. Each element can independently fold open and close, controlled by custom software running a flocking algorithm. The movements of the sculpture are perpetually evolving, driven by the flocking simulation. Its breath-like currents create an open, calm space for the building’s inhabitants to enjoy. The sculpture continues to mesmerize people from around the world, both in-person and online.
