About the Work

There are more than 40 million slaves in the world today. At IJM, we believe we can end slavery in our lifetime. Launched on Facebook in time for the holiday giving season, our film sought to rally all people of good will to send rescue to the millions trapped in slavery around the world. Set in Ghana, The Deep Place is based on the real life events of one young boy who is trafficked and enslaved by his uncle. Foli is among thousands of child slaves on Lake Volta, working up to 18 hours a day doing extremely dangerous work in the fishing industry, often underwater. For children like Foli, the only way out of slavery is to drown or be rescued. In just under 2 months, the film helped raise over $1.25M (nearly 200 rescue operations) and reached a combined 275K views on online platforms.
