About the Work
In response to the Trump administration’s proposed Travel Ban, which barred citizens of six Muslim-majority nations from the U.S., Spotify created “I’m with the banned,” a project that paired musicians from the six “banned” nations with six American artists to create collaborative music. With travel to the U.S. too uncertain, the artists recorded in Toronto, which was captured for documentary films that premiered on Spotify and in special screenings across the U.S. In addition, a fully-integrated marketing campaign supported the banned artists and their music, most of which had never been on Spotify before. The six collaborative songs were streamed over 8.5 million times, four of them charted on the Global Viral 50 chart, and the documentary content was viewed over 5.2 million times.
