When world-renowned artist Bjarne Melgaard moved home to Norway, he had a request for us: To design an email signature for his new company Bjarne Melgaard Enterprise. We believe this makes a lot of sense, considering that emails still rule contemporary office culture. We have created a visual identity that’s designed from the email signature and out. But, the thing is: Email technology has stayed largely unchanged since the the mid 90s. This brought us on a journey through the origin of email and obsolete code, where the limitations eventually became the expression: We could only design with text, default fonts and simple HTML and CSS. The identity consists of Unicode characters that can be read as Bjarne Melgaard Enterprise, an ASCII image style, coded animations, and an ever-changing set of email signatures. A visual identity created by internet culture and technology—a reflection of Bjarne Melgaard.
