About the Work

Parents spend more time with their child than any counselor. Keeping this in mind, Neurogen BSI’s pediatric psychology department, which treats children with neurological diseases, was looking for approach that focused on turning parents into counselors for their child. In light of the inability of the small pool of professionals to cater to India’s population, OMM relies heavily on participation by parents for children, aged 7-15, by prioritizing prevention of mental illnesses over rehabilitation. An interactive, non-prescriptive kit of 5 tools, enforces positive behavior through healthy discussions between parents and children, strengthening parent-child bond and training them in positive psychology. Mental Health Issues remain a taboo in India specially among students. Schools do not have a mandatory and focussed mental health curriculum in place. India does have a National Mental Health Policy which not just seeks to reduce mental health issues but also seeks to dissipate the stigma attached to mental health problems. While the National Health policy is a right step, there is a need for additional steps and awareness to be created among school children to weed the problem out at an earlier stage.
