About the Work

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, the JFK Presidential Library and Museum reintroduced a new generation to the man who inspired the mission with a fully-synchronized augmented reality recreation where every moment, maneuver, and milestone unfolded in real time, second-by-second, precisely 50 years later. A launch party was held at the Library where visitors were greeted with one of the largest AR objects ever created—a 363-foot, full-scale replica of the Saturn V rocket. We then held the first-of-its-kind livestream of an AR experience on Twitch where streamers, like Dr. Lupo, provided a “play through” of the launch—a modern version of Cronkite’s commentary 50 years ago. At precisely 9:32 AM on July 16th, the Saturn V rocket launched once again. But instead of watching it with binoculars and Super 8 cameras, thousands used their mobile phones and tablets to remake history. For those not in attendance, users could launch their own virtual rockets anywhere in the world and share it on social media. For the next four days users tracked the mission in real time. Prompts would pop up throughout this tracking sequence for over 100 hours of rare, archival JFK and NASA footage
