About the Work

Entangled is a playable intervention we created with the Little Haiti community and Little Haiti Cultural Complex within a growing Miami, FL, to provoke awareness and identity of the Haitian culture that exists within this community. We worked closely with the community and cultural complex to create an intervention in the public realm for residents and visitors to play, share, and learn about and the history, stories, and sounds of the Haitian culture. The piece is made up of three aluminum drums formed from the traditional Rada Battery Haitian drums and are connected by an organic social bench system. Each drum was painted with traditional Haitian moments in history by local Haitian Artist Serge Toussaint. This piece was designed to be a platform that would spark a spontaneous moment of community activity and social interaction through the power of play, and begin to educate the constant flow of tourists who are encouraging a massive push of gentrification to the area.
