About the Work
Boards of Change brought America’s disenfranchised voices from the streets to the polls. Plywood boards that barricaded storefronts during the Black Lives Matter protests, used by local artists to voice their frustration and hope through striking street art, were transformed into voting booths. These booths inspired residents in dozens of Chicago’s low-turnout neighborhoods to create systemic change, through the power of their vote and enabled them to become registered voters. Amplified by outdoor, social media and national PR, Boards of Change empowered Black Americans to know their vote counts and helped Chicago attain a record number of registrations and voters.
To realize the booth designs, boards from different Chicago neighborhoods were collected with permission of the store owners and cooperation of the artists. Every illustration was created in the unique style of each artist and inspired by their personal experience with inequality, racism and the protests. They contained messages of hope, unity and change, created to make people reflect.
The collection of various booths was then turned into an impactful exhibition that traveled to dozens of Chicago’s Black and Brown neighborhoods. Excited by the project, the artists and their art collectives -like Paint the City and Sounding Boards- took the booths back into their own neighborhoods and set up community events to register new voters and empower residents to use their voice at the polls.
Today, Boards of Change lives on at the DuSable Museum for African American History as part of a historic moment for the Black community.
