About the Work

In the first week of April, when New York City was the epicenter of the Covid pandemic, Philip Montgomery documented the crisis in 7 of the underfunded, overwhelmed public hospitals in the city. His photographs testify to the heroic efforts of the doctors, nurses, EMTs, and support staff working long hours at tremendous personal risk. Montgomery’s photograph of paramedics working to resuscitate a coronavirus patient who went into cardiac arrest is an unforgettable image. These vivid pictures, beautifully lit and composed by Montgomery despite working in immense chaos, bear witness to one of the most nightmarish moments in NYC’s history.
