About the Work

Our goal was to promote awareness of Google Lens to over 130 million NYT subscribers. Google Lens allows users to learn more about the world around them through image recognition and AR technology. The New York Times audience was selected because of their age range, balanced gender split, education level, and willingness to adopt new technologies. At the end of 2019, Google Lens and the New York Times Magazine worked together to make every cover and several ads Lens-enabled throughout the year. But as 2020 unfolded, social justice movements supporting Black and LGBTQ+ rights came to light in the United States. So we decided to turn our ad space into an opportunity to show support for these movements in a meaningful way. Utilizing Lens-enabled ads, we created dynamic animations that delivered surprise and delight to our audience, while also being informative and educational. Our first Lens-enabled print ad highlighted the life of Henry Ossawa Tanner, the first Black American painter to gain international acclaim. The second ad celebrated eighties New York City Harlem Ball culture. When readers used Google Lens on either of the ads, they were served an interactive video and learned more about the marginalized groups’ stories through animations, music, and voiceover. Both ads took the storytelling power of Google Lens to new heights, leveraging AR to emphasize the cultural contributions and rich history of Black and LGBTQ+ Americans, all while bridging the gap between digital and physical worlds.
