About the Work

New Museum's exhibition, ?NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star,? featured artwork made or shown in New York in 1993. To promote this show, we turned every single pay phone in Manhattan?over 5,000 of them?into a time machine, delivering hundreds of stories from some of the most famous, infamous and influential New Yorkers of that time.

By using one of the last remaining relics of that time as our storytelling device, we were able to root stories in the neighborhoods where they transpired. Every phone, from every neighborhood, gave listeners a more rounded understanding of that pivotal year, while also providing context for the art from that era. This way the New Museum?an institution that consistently celebrates its historic neighborhood, the Bowery?always stood at the center of this project, offering a collected and focused look at 1993 through the lens of art from that year.
