About the Work

Less than 1% of girls express interest in majoring in Computer Science. Yet tech is growing faster than any other industry. So Google created Made with Code — an initiative to inspire girls to try coding and see it as a means to pursue their dreams. For the holidays, we partnered with the National Park Foundation and National Park Service to let girls bring the National Tree Lighting ceremony to life through code. On the Made with Code site, girls could use an introductory coding experience to design the colors, patterns, and animation of the lights on 56 state and territory trees outside of the White House. Once a girl completed her project, her design was sent to Washington D.C. to light up her selected state’s tree. Each of the 56 trees carried 900 interactive LED lights which shined throughout December with designs coded by girls across the country.
