About the Work

The Haven Night Shelter tasked us to drive awareness and bring in donations on a minimal budget. We needed to overcome social stereotypes & bring people together - as the haves fear the have-nots, and the have-nots think the haves are blind to their plight. We created The Street Store – somewhere easy to donate, and dignified to receive. We chose accessible public areas to create an engaging activation. Donors hang up donations on interactive posters, and the homeless enjoyed a dignified ‘shopping’ experience – many for the first time. Because homelessness is a global issue, we went open-source, allowing anyone internationally to host their own. To date, 202 Street Stores have popped up around the world, in za119 cities. ONE organisation, Huffington Post, TEDx, and thousands of others, helped us generate R41million in PR exposure off a R5,000 budget, but more importantly, we brought people together like never before.
