About the Work

Almost half of the kids in Australia had never had an eye test. This has led to many vision problems in children going undetected. A child with an undiagnosed vision problem is not only at a disadvantaged now, but has the potential to be disadvantaged for the rest of their life. OPSM's charity, One Sight, is already trying to raise the standard of eye health for children living in remote communities and from underprivileged, low-socioeconomic areas. However, with limited resources they needed a tool that had been specifically designed for children to increase efficiency. Penny the Pirate is the first of its kind: e-book which is also a registered medical tool to help parents screen their child's vision. Penny requires no previous training in order to operate - significantly reducing the volunteer training requirements. It can be downloaded to any tablet device - allowing it to travel anywhere in Australia.
