About the Work
Since 2004, drone strikes in Pakistan have killed an estimated 3500+ people, a disturbing percentage of which have been innocent civilians. Including more than 200 children. Most protests in Pakistan go unnoticed globally. Drone operators routinely describe their casualties as 'Bug Splats' since viewing a human from that far above gives the sense of an insect being crushed. Our strategy to counter this insensitivity was twofold: 1) to address the drone pilot - sitting thousands of miles away - directly by reducing the distance between the predator and the victim, thereby creating a visual dialogue between the two that would create empathy; and 2) raise awareness globally of this otherwise ignored human-rights issue through an art installation in the bombed areas of Northern Pakistan, one that would be powerful enough to be spread by the world press.
