About the Work

As time passes and with no surviving veterans, WWI is becoming a distant memory. Now our only connection to the past lives in old, faded, black-and-white pictures. So for the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli, we needed more than a tribute, we wanted to keep the memory alive. We created a Tableau Vivant and brought a black-and-white WWI picture to life on an Auckland City street. The 8-hour performance was based on real New Zealanders’ war stories. An authentic surround sound audio track recreated a day in the trenches and brought their memories flooding back. You could hear the harrowing rain of bullets, meal time conversations, real letters written to loved ones, and even the songs they sang to boost morale. As well as raising money for the Returned Service Association, we helped young and old reconnect with the past. 100 years on, we made sure they were not forgotten.
