About the Work
Over the years, society has been desensitized to the objectification of women in the media, an epidemic that has contributed greatly to low self-esteem in young girls. Studies show that sexuality of women in advertising has greatly increased since the 1980s, and that 69% of young girls say that magazine models influence their idea of a perfect body shape. We created “We Are #WomenNotObjects” to bring to light this issue, and to challenge the world to reevaluate how women are portrayed in advertising. Since release, the video has garnered 450+ million media impressions, 51+ million in social reach, and has reached 160+ countries. Celebrities and influencers such as Ashton Kutcher, Alanis Morissette, World Economic Forum, George Takei, UN Women, Ashley Judd, and Global Fund for Women have shared our content on their social media channels. Through our efforts, we have created more than a campaign—we have started an invaluable conversation.
