About the Work
Black America is in a state of emergency. People are being harassed, beaten and killed while doing everyday activities such as walking to school, sitting in a car or calling for help. So on Martin Luther King Day, leading up to Trump’s Inauguration, we took action to empower Black people and their supporters through social media. By hacking the Facebook Safety Check, a tool that allows people to mark themselves safe during life threatening emergencies, we created the Unsafety Check, a simple and provocative tool that allowed Black Americans to mark themselves “unsafe” for being Black in America.
