About the Work
Irvin Berlin’s, ‘White Christmas’, as performed by Bing Crosby is the best selling Christmas song of all time. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1942 and has been the soundtrack to festive celebrations ever since. During the holiday season, a time of goodwill to all men, we re-appropriated this warm and familiar song to help Amnesty International in their fight against human rights abuses in Aleppo. The city’s residents were experiencing a very different White Christmas to the ones we were dreaming of. The city and its people were covered in a haunting blanket of white, sadly caused by barrel bombs falling from the sky rather than snow. Isla Roe recorded a beautifully melancholic version of the Christmas classic, which juxtaposed the heartbreaking imagery and led to a powerful piece of film for Amnesty, at a time when people are thinking more of others than themselves.
